- ➤ A new welcome sign (Welcome to Vigo County) is being installed near the Vigo County Courthouse at the corner of Third and Cherry streets to greet visitors; three new flagpoles and extra lighting complete the installation. Tribune-Star
- ➤ A portion of Washington Street will close on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a Final Four Fan Jam hosted by The Heart of Lebanon, which is boosting local excitement for the upcoming NCAA tournament in Indianapolis. Tribune-Star
- ➤ The Human Relations Commission will host the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration and panel discussion Monday at 6 p.m. in the auditorium on the third floor of the Vigo County History Center at 929 Wabash Ave — the panel will focus on nonviolence and social change inspired by Dr. King’s words. - ➤ On Wednesday evening, about 40 parents and staff met at Hoosier Prairie Elementary to ask Superintendent Chris Himsel questions about a district facilities plan that calls for the eventual closure of the school. Tribune-Star
- ➤ At Ouabache Elementary, students met Indiana State athletes Thursday as the gym celebrated the achievement of their reading goals plus the athletes encouraged the kids to enjoy reading. Tribune-Star
- ➤ Indiana State University has selected Follett Higher Education Group as its new partner to run the campus bookstore and online shop, offering Sycamore apparel, academic resources, and more. The change will begin in March. Tribune-Star
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce partners with the West Central Indiana Partnership to offer a nine‐month Leadership Academy for residents seeking to improve leadership and communication skills—applications open Jan. 20 and close Apr. 23—while a Civic Engagement Series is underway with additional applications coming this fall. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ ISU athletic director Nathan Christensen expects the Indiana Hoosiers to beat Miami in the College Football Playoff national championship game on Monday night in Miami Gardens, Florida (he recalled ISU's 73-0 loss in Bloomington on Sept. 12) as a sign of their strength. Tribune-Star
- ➤ The Terre Haute North-South high school swim meet took place Thursday at the Vigo County School Corporation Aquatic Center, with the South girls winning 123-63 and the South boys winning 93-77. A weather alert warns of light snow today that may leave roads slippery, so drivers should take extra caution. Tribune-Star
